Amid intense competition, U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack (IA-02) today secured a seat on the powerful Armed Service Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Armed Service Committee has jurisdiction over military personnel, military operations and counter terrorism efforts.

“I am honored to have been selected to serve on the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. During these tumultuous times, the brave service men and women from Iowa and across the country deserve respect, support and a plan for a safe return home. I will work hard to ensure every member of the armed services receives necessary training, protective equipment, and adequate pay.

Congressman Loebsack has serious concerns over the administration’s previous and current course of action in Iraq. Accordingly, the Congressman strongly disagrees with an escalation of troops, and will use his position to advocate for a quick and steady withdrawal and redeployment of troops from Iraq.

Congressman Loebsack will be joined by ten other freshmen Congressmen, Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) who will chair the committee, and Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) who will serve as the ranking Republican member on the committee.

Today’s committee assignment announcement comes on the heels on the Congressman’s official swearing-in that took place Thursday, January 4, 2007. Since then, Congressman Loebsack has voted to enhance Congressional ethics rules, enforce “pay as you go’ budgeting procedures, and today will vote to implement the 9/11 commission recommendations in an effort to make the American people safer and more secure.

Congressman Loebsack’s first committee assignment was to the Education and Labor Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Membership on these two committees allow Congressman Loebsack to fight for the people of Iowa’s Second Congressional District and keep his campaign promises of holding the administration accountable for the war in Iraq, increasing the national minimum wage and cutting interest rates on student loans.
