Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today as the House convened to begin the 116th Congress. Having been first elected in 2006, Dave was sworn in to begin his seventh term serving the people of Iowa.

“It is again an honor to be selected to represent the people of Iowa and serve as their voice in Washington. I look forward to continuing to fight on behalf of Iowa’s hard-working families. This includes expanding broadband to all communities, creating jobs here at home, boosting the rural economy, ensuring Iowans have access to a quality education at all levels and protecting, improving and expanding Social Security and Medicare.

“Before we are able to do any of that, we must work immediately to reopen the government. We cannot continue to keep 800,000 government workers furloughed or working without pay while the President and Republicans play politics and refuse to open parts of the government that have nothing to do with securing the border. Currently, the USDA is shut down and the payments that our farmers, who are already struggling, are supposed to receive are not being processed. This is unacceptable.

“Additionally, I am excited to welcome both Representative Abby Finkenauer and Representative Cindy Axne to the Iowa delegation. Their swearing in makes them the first two women to serve Iowa in the House of Representatives. I look forward to working with them to improve the lives of all Iowans.”
