Congressman Dave Loebsack today introduced legislation that builds on current public-private partnership efforts to ensure our veterans have the skills necessary to seamlessly enter the workforce after they return home. The Veterans Employment Training (VET) Act would provide grants to encourage local businesses and community colleges to offer our veterans the training needed to be successful in newly created jobs. Loebsack is a member of the Congressional Military Family Caucus and previously served on the House Armed Services Committee.
“As a proud Marine parent I have long fought to make all veterans’ transition from the battle field to home life as easy as possible,” said Loebsack. “One of the biggest struggles facing many of our veterans when they come home is returning to the workforce. That is why I recently introduced the VET Act to help veterans get the training needed in order to have the skills to be able to work and compete in our 21st century workforce.”

The “Veterans Employment Training (VET) Act” builds on current public-private partnership efforts by encouraging community colleges to partner with local businesses to provide training for new jobs. For example, an employer that wants to create new jobs, but cannot find applicants with the necessary skills for these new positions, would be able to apply for a grant through the Department of Labor in order to fund a new jobs training program exclusively for veterans at the local community college. This legislation provides those veterans interested in pursuing a new line of work the opportunity to receive the training they need to find employment.
