Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today as the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a hearing about the No Budget, No Pay Act, which would withhold Members of Congress’ pay if a budget is not passed on time.  In December, Loebsack was the second Member of Congress to cosponsor this legislation.

“Children across Iowa learn very early on that if they don’t do their chores, they won’t get their allowance.  So, it shouldn’t take much commonsense to figure out that if Congress can’t do its job and pass a budget, it shouldn’t get a paycheck,” said Loebsack.  “If Washington is going to get the economy moving again and substantially reduce the deficit over the long-term, then everyone is going to have to put partisan politics aside.  However, given Washington’s track record of partisan gridlock, I think measures need to be put in place to make sure Congress does its job, which is why I cosponsored this straight-forward legislation.

“I take this issue very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that the House holds similar hearings and this commonsense bill moves forward.”
