Loebsack Applauds Iowa Flood Center’s Efforts on Flood Education
Congressman Dave Loebsack today applauded the University of Iowa’s Iowa Flood Center for their participation in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Hazards Event on the Hill. The Iowa Flood Center was invited to Washington to highlight their advanced work to help address the needs of Iowa communities to better predict and prepare for floods. Loebsack has partnered with the Iowa Flood Center to promote legislation he introduced that would create a National Flood Center.
“The University of Iowa’s Iowa Flood Center has provided important expertise and guidance to communities around our state about how to best prevent, prepare and predict future flooding,” said Loebsack. “Unfortunately, there are currently no comprehensive flood research efforts in the U.S. and that is why I have worked with the Iowa Flood Center to promote my legislation that would ensure communities across the nation have access to the same valuable information as Iowans and we can move toward a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to understanding and preventing flooding.” Today’s event featured presentations on hazard prediction and human response as well as more than 30 NSF-funded research, interactive exhibits. The Iowa Flood Center presented a range of research projects including their flood prediction system, flood inundation maps, river modeling and other flood modeling. Loebsack continued: “I also applaud the National Science Foundation for holding this event and thank them for inviting the Iowa Flood Center to present. This type of event is critical to keep hazard preparedness at the forefront of the minds of policy makers. Their invitation, along with other leading national projects, is a testament to the great work the Iowa Flood Center has been doing.” The event was also held in light of September being National Preparedness Month with special attention being paid during the event to the recent earthquake and hurricane that led to a loss of life and billions in damage throughout the East Coast. |
