Loebsack Applauds Iowa City for Commitment to VolunteeringIowa City ranks third among mid-sized cities for volunteer rate
Congressman Dave Loebsack today congratulated Iowa City for having the third highest volunteer rate in the nation. In a report released by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), Iowa City is ranked third among the 75 mid-sized cities across the country for their volunteer rate of 50.9 percent. Loebsack has been a longtime supporter of the CNCS and its initiatives.
“Iowans take pride in their sense of community and helping others in need. Following the Floods of 2008, volunteers rose to the challenge to clean up its aftermath and are continuing to work hard to rebuild our state,” said Loebsack. “In tough economic times like these, we also remember that it is important to give back to our neighbors and help those who are less fortunate and in need of assistance. This recognition is not surprising, given Iowa’s reputation of giving back, but I am pleased that folks in Iowa City are again being honored for their efforts.” The CNCS annual report, Volunteering in America, found that nationwide, 62.8 million Americans volunteered through a formal organization last year, giving more than 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $173 billion. |
