WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman Loebsack announced grants to four organizations in the Second District to help develop and provide support for local volunteer organizations and fund the development of new volunteer organizations. Congressman Loebsack introduced the Volunteer Generation Fund as an amendment to the bipartisan Serve America Act, which was signed into law on April 21, 2009, to build the capacity of state and local volunteer organizations to recruit, manage and train volunteers.

“Iowans in the Second District know first-hand the impact that dedicated volunteers can have on a community,” said Loebsack. “Our state ranks second in the nation for volunteering, and with this funding through the Volunteer Generation Fund, we can strengthen our volunteer organizations and improve our outreach, giving more volunteers the opportunity to lend their time and address the important needs of their communities.”

United Way of Wapello County was awarded development funding to establish a new Volunteer Connector Organization. United Way of East Central Iowa, United Way of Johnson County, and Volunteer Center of Fairfield received expansion funding for current Volunteer Centers. The grantees have committed to engaging more than 40,000 volunteers and partners in their first year.
