Congressman Dave Loebsack will receive the “Distinguished Service Award,” by Voices for National Service, a nationwide advocacy group for community service and volunteerism. Congressman Loebsack is being presented this award due to his work to “prioritize national service funding and legislation.”

“Nearly two years after the floods of June 2008, we are still rebuilding in Iowa,” said Congressman Loebsack. “While we still have a long way to go, the strength of our community and the helping hands of our volunteers from across the nation will enable us to rebuild. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of the volunteers who are working with us in Iowa, and all of the volunteers across the nation who make our country better each and every day.”

Congressman Loebsack added amendments to the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act to create a new Volunteer Generation Fund. This fund will increase the supply of volunteers and strengthen volunteer programs nationwide by investing in training and recruitment efforts. Through these investments, the Volunteer Generation Fund will be able to build capacity and access for millions of new volunteers, allowing them to serve more areas, including rural and disaster stricken areas.

“I would like to commend Governor Culver and Senator Harkin for their hard work and dedication to service,” added Congressman Loebsack. “Iowans tend to lead the nation, and I am proud that Iowa’s commitment to service is being recognized.”

Congressman Loebsack joins Senator Tom Harkin and Governor Chet Culver in receiving service awards from the Voices for National Service. Jackie Norris, senior adviser to the Corporation for National and Community Service, will accept all three awards at the ceremony this evening on behalf of her fellow Iowans. Congressman Loebsack is unable to attend due to the weather.
