Places to See and Interesting Facts: Muscatine County began as a trading post in 1833, which soon led to rapid growth around what is now Muscatine. Originally, Muscatine was known as Bloomington, which was often confused with Burlington. After years of misdirected letters, Bloomington changed it’s name to Muscatine on June 7, 1849. It is now the only city in the United States to be called Muscatine, a name they derived from the Mascoutin Indians who were the original inhabitants of the land. The city became an important stop on the Mississippi River and a center of the lumbering industry. It’s most notable resident is Mark Twain, who spent some years there and wrote about Muscatine sunsets.
