Clarke County is named in honor of James Clarke, who was appointed governor of the Iowa Territory in 1845 and was the last territorial governor as Iowa was admitted as a state in 1846. The county is home to the communities of Murray, Woodburn, Weldon  and the county seat, Osceola.
